“What is love? Baby don’t hurt me.

Don’t hurt me.

No more.” (Haddaway)

I hope you sang that… if you didn’t go back and sing it. Go ahead.

Put a couple of your world class dance moves in there as well. Don’t hold back.

Great job. You were fantastic!

That song brings up a great question, one that people all over desire to know the answer to. Love is something that everyone craves, and wants to understand.

So… What IS love?

Well, lucky for us, God actually spelled this answer out for us in the Bible.

1 John 3:16 (NIV)

“This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters."

Whoa. Now THAT is radical love. It doesn’t say “This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ had a coffee date with you.” Or “Jesus Christ liked your insta photo.” It says that he gave his life up for you. He sacrificed his life for you! And so often we tend to read that as if that is no big deal. DID YOU NOT HEAR THAT? God DIED for YOU! He died for Every Single Person that you see every day! Why? Because He LOVES you. He LOVES us. He is crazy about His people, His creation. We are His masterpiece. He wants to be with us.

And it wasn’t like we deserved this kind of love. In fact, the Bible clearly states that God demonstrated his own love for us that “while we were still sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8 NIV).

So it appears that the way God views love is putting your own needs aside for someone else. It doesn’t seem to matter if the other person deserves your love or attention. It also appears that love isn’t always very glamorous.

Loving someone can literally be choosing to smile at them, asking how they are, praying for them, buying them coffee. Telling them that Jesus is crazy about them and thinks about them all of the time.

There are so many ways that we can show other people how loved they really are.

What if we chose to love the people around us like that?

What if we went out of our way to show someone that God is crazy about them?

What if we decided to get our eyes off of ourselves and start using them to look at the other people God loves?

Think of how crazy your classes, workplaces, living spaces, and hangout spots would get.

I can guarantee that life would get interestingly AWESOME!

Jesus decided that the people you see every day were worth dying for.

Do you believe him?
